Holbeck Urban Village: A Developing Destination
The vision for this area of Leeds is more than the creation of buildings, offices and apartments: it is about creating a sustainable community developed with consideration for the surrounding areas of Holbeck and Beeston and how the urban village connects these communities to the city centre.
Key themes for the regeneration of this distinctive area include the movement of traffic, the creation of high quality public open spaces, and the quality of the built environment.
The vision for the area is:
- to improve connectivity between the city centre and the surrounding communities of Beeston, Beeston Hill and Holbeck, creating new opportunities for employment, living and leisure.
- to establish a new creative quarter for the city focused on new media and digital technologies that will strengthen Leeds as a regional business centre.
- to preserve the area’s unique character, combining the architectural legacy with new high quality and contemporary design.
- to create a mixed-use, sustainable community with a distinctive sense of place, which exemplifies best practice in urban regeneration and sustainable development.
The regeneration of Holbeck Urban Village is a long term commitment from Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Forward to make a real difference to the lives of residents and businesses in this unique area.
The journey started in 1999 when the area was designated an urban village, and is expected to take more than 20 years, but certainly promises to be worth the wait.
