OUGD603: Extended Practice - Brief 11 Research

Visual research into format and design of the student ambassador handbook. I did this brief in one day as a challenge. I therefore undertook secondary visual research and primary verbal research with other ambassadors and I also drew research from my own personal experiences.

OUGD603: Extended Practice - Brief 10 - Looking at the audience

The audience for this brief are people aged 15-24. The first thing I wanted to do was brainstorm all about the audience and get all of my ideas on paper.

BBC Content

I then looked at what other social media sites offered in comparison to the bbc. It is clear that the two are very different but I do think it is very important to look at what young people engage with as that is the best way to get them to return to the bbc.

BBC Brief to do list:

OUGD603: Extended Practice - Brief 12 Research

As research for this brief I spoke with a number of people who commonly use online dating sites such as tinder and happn. When speaking to these people I asked if they would like to find relationships based on their musical interests. Many of the people I asked said yes they would. One user said they would like to have the opportunity to buy gig or festival tickets and meet their matches at the events. This idea was also brought up at CODE Computerlove, I therefore plan to include this feature in my app design.

Secondary research:

I looked at other dating site apps and websites to see what features they offered. I decided to use some of the same features from the Tinder app such as the swipe feature.

OUGD603: Extended Practice - Brief 12 Wireframes and Development

Most of my development process is within my Red file and has a lot of notes within it. I believe that the file details more about my development and it would be detrimental to my design practice to repeat myself.

OUGD603: Extended Practice - End of Year Show Ideas and Initial Brainstorm

Laura and I know that we want the name of the end of year show to fulfil a number of purposes:
  • Represent the diversity within college
  • Be memorable within Leeds
  • Represent what the EOYS is about
  • Be punchy and simple
  • Be different to other EOYS ideas
  • Not follow trends and be unique
We came up with this checklist and set out to think of a name which we could match a concept to. Before starting this step we both have a similar idea about the concept behind our EOYS proposal will be.  We both want the EOYS to have some aspect of interactivity within it as I am interested in User Experience within website and Laura's interests lie within interactive print design.

Name brainstorm:

Laura and I want to ensure that the name we choose will stand out from other EOYS's and will present us with exciting avenues to work with. The names we have experimented with suggest the premise of the EOYS and also the range of diverse work that will be displayed within in it.

The top 3 names we have come up with are:

  • Reflect or Reflection
  • Creative Factory
  • Building blocks
Reflect or Reflection represents the journey that visitors will go on when they attend the event as well as explaining what the EOYS is to the students at LCA.

Creative Factory presents a lot of interesting ideas to work with on an interactive scale though it might be too cliche and expected.

Building Blocks represents the journey each student has been through during their course and also the next steps they will need to take to continue in their chosen creative field.

After a lot of deliberation Laura and I have come to the conclusion that Reflection is the best name for our concept proposal. We believe that it highlights the key purpose of the show for the students and this is the main reason for having the EOYS. Though we know that another purpose is to present some physical work to visiting professionals with the hope of employment we think it should be more about the students journey.

With the name now secured we can think about the logo.

OUGD603: Extended Practice - End of Year Show Briefing

Today we were given the End of Year Show Briefing by Andrew Craske and Lee from Peter and Paul. The brief from LCA was very hard to understand as it did not give concise and succinct instructions. Lee identified this and had prepared a Peter and Paul version of the brief.

LCA Brief:

Peter and Paul Brief:

I know that I want to complete this brief as almost every brief completed by students at LCA is done by the same people and the aesthetic is becoming boring and too trendy. I am also interested in briefs that offer an opportunity to think of large scale ideas that reach a wider audience.

I have chosen to work with Laura on this brief as we are both of a similar creative mind and work well together.  We both also feel that it is unfair that certain individuals are given LCA briefs every time they are set, which has a negative affect on us as a degree and also the college as their diversity is not being represented by different design aesthetics but instead represents the cliche and now 'accepted' trend that is graphic design.

OUGD603: Extended Practice - Brief 12 Heartbeat Idea and Logo Development

I attended a graduate experience day at CODE computerlove in Manchester. See PPP Post here. From this I chose to design the Heartbeat app.

I wanted to develop the logo with a music and love link together. I carried out some research into other logos that use music notes and hearts in interesting ways.

Out of all the images I found this image the most effective. I plan to perfect this idea.
